Transport and supply chain management update
The year 2010 is fast approaching and with it the culmination of years of hype surrounding the Fifa Soccer World Cup. Never before has the continent bore witness to an infrastructural shift of such magnitude and, despite criticism and sceptics, South Africa has launched itself into the heart of a new infrastructural age. The transport sector has accurately been highlighted by the government as a key contributor to South Africa’s competitiveness in global markets and is increasingly being seen as a crucial engine for economic growth and social development. In late 2008, investor confidence was boosted with the announcement that the South African cabinet had initiated a project through the Department of Transport (DoT) to develop a National Transport Master Plan (Natmap). The aim of this venture is to establish a multimodal transportation system to meet South Africa’s transport needs as far into the future as 2050. It has been described as a development plan that will focus on transport infrastructure of national significance, in order to meet transport needs of future economic and land use development in a sustainable and investor appealing manner.
