Energy management award

GlaxoSmithKline Cape Town factory wins GSK Global Energy Trophy

Colin Nelson, senior vice president for Consumer Healthcare Supply Chain, addresses site management team

GSK Cape Town factory was awarded the GSK Global Manufacturing Supply Energy Trophy, which is an annually contested trophy awarded to the site with the best energy management programme.

This prestigious award has put Cape Town on the GSK Energy Map and marks the first time that the trophy has been held on the African continent. Previous Energy Trophy title holders have been Irvine and Barnard Castle sites in the United Kingdom and Sonepat in India.

GSK employs approximately 110 000 people, of which 26 000 are employed by 74 factories in 31 countries that report into the central energy management database. All of the sites were screened by GSK’s Global Energy Management Team and Cape Town was selected as one of 16 sites shortlisted to submit a presentation. The top six sites were: Nabha (India), Ware (UK), Imaichi (Japan), Eveux/NDB (France), Biopharms (US) and Cape Town (South Africa).

The energy trophy is awarded to the site that achieves the best combined result against a set of criteria including:

  • Performance – Project portfolio, behavioural programmes, use of technology, innovation, process improvements, 2013+ plans, renewable energy projects.
  • Sharing – Case studies, sharing with other sites, Climate Change & Energy Reduction Project team engagement, budget setting and reporting, Energy Kaizen support etc.
  • Site circumstances – Specific challenges and constraints that the site has successfully mitigated, which could have impacted energy reduction activity and the ability to deliver it.

The announcement was made by the outgoing GSK GMS president, David Pullman, in a live GSK global telecast on 10 December 2012.

On 8 January 2013, Colin Nelson, senior vice president for Consumer Healthcare Supply Chain, officially handed over the Energy Trophy to GSK Cape Town’s energy management team in a presentation ceremony at the Cape Town site in Epping.
