International trade programme applications are now open for SA entrepreneurs.

Small businesses in the ICT sector are invited to apply to a business-changing programme: the International Trade Programme. Designed for smaller enterprises offering products or services relevant to the ICT sector, the information, activities and opportunities culminating in a trade visit to the UK could enhance your business and give you the platform to take it to the next level!

Brought to businesses by BT (British Telecom) Global Services and MEDO this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will see a select number of entrepreneurial enterprises chosen to partake in an International Trade Bootcamp, which will run in June over six days.

The Bootcamp will include innovative highlights designed to assist small businesses in growing and developing as well as gaining the maximum benefit from such an opportunity. These highlights include:

  • Leadership – personal styles and managing power distances SA vs UK
  • Building international relationships, understanding cultural etiquette, cultural and geographical barriers, differences and similarities
  • Scaling a business to manage operations in two countries
  • Operations strategy development and management
  • Trade requirements for importing and exporting
  • Cross-border financial transactions
  • Managing virtual relationships and teams
  • Presentation skills

The Bootcamp programme culminates with a presentation evening where entrepreneurs pitch their businesses to sponsor personnel, British Company CEOs and BT Global Services team members to demonstrate their readiness for international trade – a thrilling and highly beneficial exercise. Here entrepreneurs will need to impress the judges and demonstrate that they will be honorable ambassadors for the sponsor, BT and South Africa brands.

The Bootcamp trade visit is designed to secure relationships and develop trade relations between those travelling and UK-based businesses in preparation for the UK London and Coventry Programme, which takes place in September. This event will see networking events, appointments, workshops at the Serious Gaming Institute, the University Centre of Applied Entrepreneurship programme delivered by a globally renowned faculty, presentations and a reception with the South African Trade Commissioner in London to share the value and experiences of the visit.

Entrepreneurs will need to pre-arrange their appointments as well as pay for their UK visas and spending money not covered in the meals and travel allowances. Everything else is sponsored by BT Global Services.

Applicants, who will be interviewed in May, will need to impress the selectors by showing how they will benefit from the opportunities of the ITP. Those interested should visit http://www.medo.co.za/internationa-trade-programme and fill in the application form. Arrangements and requirements will be stipulated when appointments are made.

Last year, the trade visit resulted in five of the eleven small businesses signing deals or partnerships while the remaining six created networks with potential businesses. This is an opportunity not to be missed!
