It is hard to believe that 2010 is finally here, with all the debate, doubt, setbacks and challenges brought forth by the preparations for the Fifa Soccer World Cup.
And yet, I think it is safe to say that we have impressed upon the powers that be that South Africa is indeed ready for the biggest sporting event it has ever hosted.
At the very least, all one has to do, is look at the astounding soccer stadiums that have mushroomed around South Africa and the Gautrain that will be ready to operate during the month-long event, to name a few of the infrastructure development projects that have been successful – and they said we wouldn’t be ready!
The energy and excitement that South Africans are creating in the run-up to the sporting event is enough for the most stalwart defender of pessimism to be swayed. And really, who wouldn’t be caught up in the optimism that abounds?
Because not only is it one of South Africa’s proper debuts into the global business community, where our country has a real opportunity to influence top business and decision-makers in many first-world countries, but we also have entered into a new decade.
The combination of the 2010 World Cup and a new decade is a compelling portent – the symbolism of how great South Africa can and will be in the next nine years is breath-taking.
This is the time for South Africans to grasp every opportunity with both hands. We have been given one of the greatest gifts in the form of being able to impress the pants off the rest of the world, thanks to this sporting event.
This is our time to prove to those sceptics that South Africa is the land of investment and opportunity; a land of hospitable people; of breath-taking beauty; and most of all, a country that is unique and alive with possibility.
