The South African Society of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons (SASMFOS) will host its annual SASMFOS Congress 2019 from 24 to 26 October 2019 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The SASMFOS Congress 2019 is hosted in conjunction with the British Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS), Australia New Zealand Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (ANZAOMS), and the African division of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologists (IAOP). The programme features a wide range of themes with eminent lectures from all participating societies and associations.

“The South African healthcare sector is facing significant change and transformation, especially with “Delegates can expect to enjoy an informative week with plenty of opportunities for networking and collaboration with local and international leading industry professionals,” says Dr Frits Hoogendijk, President of SASMFOS.

“The annual congress week kicks-off on 21 October with a three-day Cadaver Masterclass Workshop which is endorsed by the International Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) as a SIGN course,” adds Hoogendijk. The pre-congress workshops take place from 21 to 23 October, leading into the annual Congress from the 24th.

The congress aims to provide guidance on best practice management for surgeons and medical aid funders, as well as insight into innovation trends in the industry, extending beyond everyday practice and incorporating new ideas outside the usual for collaboration with different sectors. “Space for workshops is limited and both delegate and non-delegates are strongly advised to register as soon as possible,” cautions Hoogendijk. Workshops will be run by sponsors Biomet, Stryker, Southern Implants, Straumann, and Dentsply Sirona.

The highly-respected American MFO specialist surgeon Dr Rui Fernandes will present his abstract on perforator flaps in head and neck reconstruction. From private dental practice to healthcare law, Dr Alasdair McKelvie, from the UK, will present two legal abstracts on claims drivers and regulatory investigations, and how indemnity and insurance works. Other notable speakers of the conference include BOAMS President Dr Satyesh Parmar, academic stalwarts Prof Johan Reyneke and Prof Kurt-W Bütow, Dr Louwrens “Blackie” Swart and Dr Bhavin Visavadia.
